The Alter Jazz Ensemble is a pioneering music project that fuses traditional Jewish prayer and song with jazz music, melding together disparate worlds to create a unique musical offering. The project is an initiative of American-born and Australian-based hipster/hassid Rabbi Noam Sendor and produced by renowned Australian composer Adam Starr.
The ensemble recently returned from their third international tour, having performed in the US in December of 2016 and 2015, also having toured the UK in 2014 in support of the launch of their debut album 'New Altar'.
Noam Sendor is a unique vocalist, bringing a genuine and pure jazz tone to his own style of hazanut (traditional cantorial singing), which is combined with improvisation and beatboxing.
A graduate of the Royal Academy in London, Adam has led his own jazz ensembles that have toured the world, in addition to scoring traditional compositions for film and the concert hall.
Aside from his solo career as Roscoe James Irwin, he has had huge success playing, writing and recording with a multitude of artists including his main touring bands The Cat Empire and The Bamboos, as well as Harry Connick Jr, Paul Kelly, Belle and Sebastian, John Butler, Washington, Brian May and Roger Taylor (Queen), Angus Stone, and many others.
Anton plays in internationally renowned band The Bamboos and is a sort after instrumentalist performing and recording regularly in Melbourne. Projects he has been involved in include: Frock, The Australian Jewish Music Ensemble, The B Sharp Big Band, The Daniel Gassin Sextet and The Cam McAllister Sextet along with many others.
Ben has done live tours (including Eric Burdon) and recordings with Tim Rogers (UMI) and Kerri Simpson, and is perhaps best known for his cutting edge work as singer, trombone and ukulele player for Melbourne bands ‘The Hoodangers’ and ‘The Band Who Knew Too Much’.
Gavin is an in-demand bass player and amp designer. He has toured the world extensively, and performed with such bands as Pete Murray, Incognito and 'Fire and Rain'.
